Olomouc’ research library, honored by a stamp in 1966

April 18, 2006

Today I received a big cardboard box containing enough bibliophialtelic material to keep me busy the next two years. (Thank you Larry, this is incredible..) I will post bit by bit some of the pieces right here.

The first one I picked rather randomly is a czechoslovak issue put out in 1966. It celebrates the 400th anniversary of the Vědecká knihovna v Olomouci (Research library in Olomouc) – the founding was 1566 within the Jesuit academy of  Olomouc. The graphical design was done by the slovakian graphic artist Vincent Hložník, the engraving was made by Jan Mráček.

Stamps & Postcards, in LIBREAS

April 13, 2006

I put down a little reflexion on collecting and bibliophilately in the current issue of the electronic journal LIBREAS . Library Ideas: Die Bibliophilatelie, das Sammeln und das Sein. Though the text is completely written in german all non-german-speakers may enjoy the small gallery which comes as an extra to the article: Gallery.

There are also two great picture postcards on the New York Public Library to be found in this issue of LIBREAS:

Treasures of the philatelic collection of the BL, homaged on stamps

April 2, 2006

I'm sure not anyone knows about the philatelic collection of the British Library but obviously the Saint Helena Post Office does, which shall not come to suprising as the island is official overseas territory of the United Kingdom. However me being a bibliophilatelist really appreciate the Post Office's decision to issue this january a set of six stamps and the appendant FDCs etc. to homage some rarities kept in this special collection. It is – to say so – a "double strike" to us connaisseurs because it brings together the beauty of the philatelic passion with the wonder of library…
But as the island is not really in the middle of everything of course it is rather unlikely one will find one of those stamps in daily mail traffic (at least here in Germany).
